[ Several years back I was in a home accident, and when they brought me into the emergency department, after the doctor saw me, he instructed them to send me to CT scan (Computered Tomography). I responded, I don't want a CT Scan, I prefer to do MRI. The doctor asked me why I didn't want CT, I said I don't want to be exposed to any unnecessary radiation (Ionizing/XRay). He insisted this was the hospital's protocol, I insisted I still didn't want to have a CT. He said, so you don't want me to provide treatment? I said, no that is not what I am saying I don't want a CT, I prefer MRI.
He took me to CT against my will and while they were prepping me they injected something into my IV. I got this hot feeling and than felt nauseous...I asked what did you just give me.. He said morphine, I said why would you administered morphine after I declined. He said because it is going to take your pain away. I go into CT and I tell the technologist, I don't want to do the CT, The Tech said the doctor said you have to do it. Well, this turned into a big deal I spoke with whomever would listen to me, patient advocate supervisor, and they told me well we don't have anyone in MRI now they all went home. Subsequently I found out these were all lies, after my CT results came back, they said she has to go to MRI. When I was transported down to MRI, not only did I see a sign that had MRI hours until 11 p.m. they also had on call hours. I asked the tech when she came in, she said I have been here since 3 p.m. and I'm here until 11 p.m. and then someone else is on call all night until the morning shift comes in.
This has not only happened to me, but other family members and friends who have all expressed extreme concerns. One just has to read your local news paper, health or self help magazine and many scientific journals to know that this issue is not new.
This has become my passion to get the word out and educate all parents, about the overuse and misuse of CT Scans and Xray which are both ionizing radiation and directly related to cancer and may cause secondary malignance in patients with cancer. We are exposed to radiation all around us but at much lower doses, why expose our family members to these greater amounts for someone else's gain?
Medicine is suppose to protect the patients not to protect the businesses. Ionizing radiation is applied constructively in a wide variety of fields such as medicine, research, manufacturing, construction, and many other areas, but presents a health hazard if proper measures against undesired exposure aren't followed. Exposure to ionizing radiation causes damage to living tissue, and can result in mutation, radiation sickness, cancer, and death.
At the risk of our children and family, hospitals and private facilities are putting our family members at risk to unnecessary radiation. The exposure to radiation is cumulative, stays with you for life, and changes your DNA, and is passed on to your children. One Cat Scan is equal to 300 to 500 X-rays.
If you are brought to a hospital due to any accident, the protocol for every hospital is to do a Cat Scan first before any other testing is done whether you need it or not, when there are safer and more diagnostic imaging modalities such as, MRI and Ultra Sound available.
MRI & Ultra Sound are non ionizing, this means there is no radiation involved.
Why is this not the first line of imaging done to our children and family members? They will tell you everything but the truth. But the truth is this brings the hospitals and private facilities very tremendous revenues at the expense of the patients health and safety.
Supporting this effort will get the word out to every parent and individual, it will give us the power to educate our Representatives both state and federal to put an end to this practice and save our families.: ]
